Hurricane Irma
September 2017 Hurricane Irma made landfall in an area 20-50 miles north of Key West as a Category 4 with 140mph winds with recorded gusts of 180 on Big Pine Key. About a month after the storm passed I visited this area on Long Beach Road. Hard to grasp the force of the storm. Most homes along the street looked similar to this one.

The Milwaukee Art Museum, often referred to as "the Calatrava", contains a movable, wing-like brise soleil that opens up for a wingspan of 217 feet during the day, folding over the tall, arched structure at night or during inclement weather. The pavilion received the 2004 Outstanding Structure Award from the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering. This iconic building, overlooking Lake Michigan contains over 25,000 pieces of artwork. Wikipedia

Street walking
Sometimes I wander through Key West neighborhoods looking for the things that normally would not cause me to pause. But with camera in hand, scenes like this make me stop a moment during which they tell me a brief story.

Lady in red
Beautiful pocket park in Key West.

A bar on Duval Street sporting plenty of action. I took this around 6am on a walk around Key West one morning.

Bumble Bee Buzz
This Day Lily with bee photo was taken at the Boerner Botanical gardens in Milwaukee. The Bumble bee lives in underground colonies with anywhere from 50 to 500 individuals. The buzzing sound you hear when they are on flowers is them vibrating by shivering their flight muscles at particular frequencies to help dislodge pollen from the anthers of flowers.

I was in a time capsule of a house dating back to the 1950s and this just caught my eye.

B-2 Spirit
The Northrop B-2 Spirit, also known as the Stealth Bomber, is an American heavy strategic bomber, featuring low observable stealth technology designed for penetrating dense anti-aircraft defenses. Designed during the Cold War, it is a flying wing design with a crew of two. The bomber is subsonic and can deploy both conventional and thermonuclear weapons. The B-2 is the only acknowledged aircraft that can carry large air-to-surface standoff weapons in a stealth configuration.

Top of the world
Brian Head peak Utah at almost 12,000 feet. On the dark side I've seen snow drifts in July. There was a small old stone shelter up here until last month when severe winds destroyed it.

Ready To Rumble
The P51 fist flew in 1940 while the F16 behind it entered service in 1980. The EAA convention in Oshkosh WI is an aircraft lovers dream come true. This year 10,000+ aircraft attended, 19,500 or 134 takeoffs/landings per hour during 11 days made it by far, the busiest airport in the world.

Fort Jefferson
Fort Jefferson is a massive coastal fortress. It is the largest brick masonry structure in the Americas and is composed of over 16 million bricks. The building covers 16 acres. Among United States forts, only Fort Monroe in Virginia and Fort Adams in Rhode Island are larger. The fort is located on Garden Key in the lower Florida Keys within the Dry Tortugas National Park, 68 miles west of the island of Key West.

Miss Virginia
Douglas DC-3C (C47) N47E “Miss Virginia” was manufactured in 1943 in Long Beach, CA as a Military model C-47A. She served at POPE with the Training Command in 1944 and 1945, then with the Air Material Command at Davis Monthan, AZ, then with the National Guard in Oklahoma City in the 50’s, then on to the U.S. Army proving ground as a test platform until 1966 when it went into storage at Davis Monthan. In 1990 it began a 10 year restoration. I took this photo at the EAA airshow in Oshkosh WI.

I was in a field with thousands of sunflowers. I found it interesting the number of insects that were in and around them making the field buzz.

B-29 Superfortress
The Boeing B-29 Superfortress is an American four-engine propeller-driven heavy bomber designed by Boeing and flown primarily by the United States during World War II and the Korean War. Named in allusion to its predecessor, the B-17 Flying Fortress, the Superfortress was designed for high-altitude strategic bombing but also excelled in low-altitude night incendiary bombing and in dropping naval mines to blockade Japan. B-29s also dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and became the only aircraft that has ever used nuclear weapons in combat. Only 2 remain flying today, Wifi and Doc.

Standing in one place, shoot right then left
On this rare snow covered morning I quickly set up my camera on the edge of a wash. I turned right and shot up the wash towards the Red Mountain that borders Snow Canyon State Park then turned the camera left and took another down the wash towards the Beaver Dam mountains. I spent the previous 2-3 hours in the park taking other photos of snow covered red sandstone, sand dunes and black lava. I had to move fast because in Ivins Utah snow like this only falls every couple of years and is gone in as many hours.

Like everything else in Havana, very old and rundown but lots of character.

Aspen Forest
Northern Utah in the Park City area.

A Beautiful Walk
Boca Chica Naval Air Station (Key West) is just over the far mangroves. I love to walk the coast here as the water depth varies from a few inches to a few feet depending on tides. There are birds, sea creatures, plants, coral and F18 Super Hornets to keep my interest as I walk.

Firework Art
At the end of a fireworks photo session I wrap up the camera, take it home, insert the cameras memory card in the computer and am always surprised at what was captured.

Reflection Fun
Walking around downtown Milwaukee taking photos.

Fireball Rising
Almost impossible to photograph the sun without clouds. Even with their help I have to lower the amount of light coming into the camera. This reduces the light everywhere except the the sun, and its reflection. The fisherman floated by at just the right moment to make for a much more interesting photo.

Sailing into the sunset

Joshua Tree in Gold Butte National Monument
Joshua trees are fast growers for a desert species; new seedlings may grow at an average rate of 3 inches per year in their first 10 years, then only about 1.5 per year. The trunk consists of thousands of small fibers and lacks annual growth rings, making determining the tree's age difficult. This tree has a top-heavy branch system, but also what has been described as a "deep and extensive" root system, with roots reaching down to 36 ft. If it survives the rigors of the desert, it can live for hundreds of years; some specimens survive a thousand years. The tallest trees reach about 49 ft. New plants can grow from seed, but in some populations, new stems grow from underground rhizomes that spread out around the parent tree.
The first time I "bumped" into one I thought I'd been stabbed thereafter keeping my distance.

Liftoff
One of my favorite things to photograph especially if they let me wander around while they inflate then underneath while they all lift and fly away. This was taken years ago in Monroe WI which is world famous for award winning cheeses.

Another beautiful building wrapped in decay. I probably would not have noticed this building back in the 1950s.

Getting Ready
Each year at the end of October Key West welcomes Fantasy Fest. Trying to stay with the annual theme, painters decorate people as part of the festivities.

Public chalkboard
Streetwalking in old downtown Las Vegas and came upon this storefront art.

Godbe mill
An old silver-ore processing mill located in Pioche Nevada, the Godbe Mill was established in the 1920s and abandoned in the 1940s. It used a rather unique aerial tramway to transport the ore in buckets from the mine atop Treasure Hill to this processing plant where it was crushed and the silver extracted.

Grumman F7F Tigercat
The Grumman F7F Tigercat is a heavy fighter aircraft that served with the United States Navy (USN) and United States Marine Corps (USMC) from late in World War II until 1954. It was the first twin-engine fighter to be deployed by the USN. Wikipedia I took this at the EAA show in Oshkosh WI. It was built in 1943 and named "Here Kitty Kitty".

Car trouble on a lonely road
Driving the backroads in South Dakota we came upon this 1940s vintage Ford which looked like it had been there a very long time. What a great story it could tell, from the proud owner picking it up brand new to its resting place here on this very lonely road.

Nelson Nevada
Site of the old Techatticup Mine and a great collection of junk. Population in 2022 was 17 (but that might include the cemetery).

Not so odd really
Most days encountering a red woman riding a bike through a cemetery would seem odd. But this being Fantasy Fest in Key West it's simply photogenic.

Grafton Settlement
Historic Mormon settlement on the south side of the Virgin River, adjoining orchards and farmland; last occupied in the 1940s. The town contains five original, partly restored buildings plus pieces of iron equipment and other relics. Zion National can be seen in the background.

Navajo Bridge
When it was first built, Navajo Bridge in AZ was the only place to cross the Colorado River for 600 miles. Prior to its completion in 1929, travelers between Utah and Arizona had to cross using Lee’s Ferry river crossing. Until the bridge was completed, there was no direct route between Utah and Arizona and travelers had to trek hundreds of miles around the canyon to cross the River.

Tropical golden hour
An hour after sunrise and sunset are called the golden hours during which time the light really nice for taking certain types of photos. I took this while walking a beach in Key West.
