Memorial Day 2024
An organization named Follow the Flag suspended this between 2 sandstone peaks in Snow Canyon State Park in Ivins Utah. The photo was taken with the setting sun directly behind it. The flag measures 150' by 78', is a total of 11,800 square feet and weighs over 400 pounds.

Bobcat
Weighing 15-33 lbs, the bobcat is a nocturnal, generally solitary cat equally at home in forests and deserts; it is less inclined to climb trees or swim. It feeds on rodents, rabbits, hares, and some birds. Wikipedia I found him in front of the house and was surprised how close he let me get. The reason was he had a rabbit trapped below him that was hiding behind a cactus, neither wanting to move. Eventually the cat stood up and slowly walked away from both of us.

The Douglas DC-3 first flew in 1935 with production reaching over 16,000 planes. Many continue to be used in a variety of niche roles. As of 2023 it is estimated about 150 are still flying. I took this at the EAA convention in Oshkosh WI.

High Above The Colorado River
Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge Pat Tillman, an American football player who left his career with the Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the United States Army and was killed in Afghanistan in 2004 by friendly fire. It is an arch bridge that spans the Colorado River between the of Arizona and Nevada. The bridge is located within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and carries Interstate 11 and U.S. Route 93 over the Colorado River. The bridge was the first concrete-steel composite arch bridge built in the United States, and incorporates the widest concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere. At 890 feet above the Colorado River, it is the second highest bridge in the United States after the Royal Gorge Bridge near Cañon City, Colorado, and is the world's highest concrete arch bridge. I took this photo while standing on top of the Hoover Dam. Pedestrian access is provided over the bridge who wish to take in a different view of the nearby dam and river below, but the dam is not visible for those driving across it.

Orchid
Orchids are one of the two largest families of flowering plants. There are over 28,000 currently accepted species of orchids and horticulturists have produced more than 100,000 hybrids. The number of orchid species is nearly equal to the number of bony fishes, more than twice the number of bird species, and about four times the number of mammal species. (Wikipedia)

Gunlock Reservoir Overflow
Fed by a record snowpack in the surrounding mountains, the waterfalls at the Gunlock Reservoir near St. George UT is flowing again and unleashing a torrent of water and visitors. It’s the third time in the past five years the water from the reservoir has cascaded over the dam and spilled onto the cliffside rocks, creating the rare waterfalls that lure visitors from all over Utah and southern Nevada. Desert Color
Ivins Utah is on the outskirts of St George bordered by red sandstone mountains, a Paiute reservation and large tracts of BLM land. The elevation is is about 3500', almost anything can be grown with supplementary water, snow come 2x/year but rarely lasts past 10am. Air is dry, rarely gets below freezing, it gets hot in July and August without the extremes of nearby Arizona and Nevada. The soil is orange due to the sandstone mountains behind me. Spring color begins in February as the temperatures climb with the falling rain.

American White Pelican
American White Pelicans feed from the water’s surface, dipping their beaks into the water to catch fish and other aquatic organisms. They do not plunge-dive the way Brown Pelicans do. They are superb soarers (they are among the heaviest flying birds in the world) and often travel long distances in large flocks by soaring. They can grow to an astonishing 9.5 feet in length, 5.5 feet long and weigh as much as 20lbs. I've seen flocks in FL, UT and WI that number over a thousand.

Labor Day 1935
The death of Flagler’s railroad happened on Labor Day in 1935. It began when the barometer started dropping. Nobody knew that the most powerful hurricane to ever hit the United States was on its way. In the 200-mph winds the railroad cars were blown off the track. Only the locomotive, which weighed 320,000 pounds, stood up to the storm. More than 400 bodies were recovered. Most had drowned though others were killed by flying debris. The Flagler railroad was lost too. When I drive across the New Seven Mile Bridge now I crane my neck to look at the Old Seven Mile Bridge and I see ghosts. Jeff Klinkenberg - Historian

Gambel’s quail
Gambel's quail primarily move about by walking and can move surprisingly fast through brush and undergrowth. They are rarely seen in flight. Any flight is usually short and explosive, with many rapid wingbeats, followed by a slow glide to the ground. In the spring, Gambel's quail pair off for mating and become very aggressive toward other pairs. The female typically lays 10–12 eggs concealed in vegetation, often at the base of a rock or tree. The chicks leave the nest with their parents within hours of hatching. Wikipedia

Bahia Honda
The Bahia Honda Rail Bridge is a derelict railroad bridge in the lower Florida Keys connecting Bahia Honda Key with Spanish Harbor Key. It was originally part of the Overseas Railway, but the state of Florida purchased it from the Florida East Coast Railway after the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane and converted it for automobile use as part of the Overseas Highway in 1938. After a replacement Bahia Honda Bridge was opened in 1972, two spans of the old bridge were removed for the safety of boaters. Wikipedia
