Ghost Town
By 1914, Rhyolite Nevada was in decline and by 1919, it was a deserted ghost town. Its last resident died in 1924. In it's day was a producing gold mining town.

When I met this gentleman he'd been living on the streets of Key West for at least 30 years. When I asked him how long he'd been homeless he said "since my car was stolen".

Nelson Nevada
Nelson Nevada Mines, active from about 1858 until 1945. Many of the men that created this area were deserters from the Civil War. This was one of the first major gold strike areas in Nevada. Now a gold mine of great junk. Many open mines and ventilation shafts-use caution.

Rhyolite
Founded in 1904 and dead by 1916, Rhyolite was one of several short lived boom-towns from the late Gold Rush era. People were drawn to the desert on the edge of Death Valley by the promise of gold found amongst quartz in local mines, and by 1906 the town had all the promising indicators of permanence with largest population in the area.
According to the US National Park Service: “The town immediately boomed with buildings springing up everywhere. One building was 3 stories tall and cost $90,000 to build. A stock exchange and Board of Trade were formed. The red light district drew women from as far away as San Francisco. There were hotels, stores, a school for 250 children, an ice plant, two electric plants, foundries and machine shops and even a miner’s union hospital.” Per Atlas Obscura

Quaking Aspen Forest
Photo was taken near Park City Utah. The leaves quake or tremble in light breezes and turn a brilliant yellow in fall.

Slot Canyon
In Page AZ there are some fine slot canyons on the reservations. Some have relatively easy access but some require negotiating ladders and steps. When the sun is high in the sky the Navajo sandstone lights up in different shades of red and golds. It's hard not to take a good photo in these canyons as long as you have a camera that allows lots of light to enter as it's rather dark at these depths.

Dry Stream Bed
Joined a photography club in Utah. One morning in White Pocket National Monument, Charles the club leader, yelled to me "look down" which I did but saw nothing but bare sandstone. I looked at him and again he yelled "just look down". So I pointed the camera in front of my feet and took a photo. He later explained most photographers are always looking up or out for a subject and walking past the down. From that day on, some of my (IMHO) more interesting photos are from also looking down.

Milwaukee
The City of Milwaukee, is both the most populous and most densely populated city in Wisconsin. It is the second largest city on Lake Michigan's shore behind Chicago. The Art Museum is centermost in the photo.

Art in the making
A camera walk in Key West turned up a nice house where a finger painter was taking a break.

Pretty old Chicago skyscraper.

Key West Visitor
With it's protected harbor (and really fun place to visit) many ships stop for various reasons. Years ago this visitor sailed by and I took its picture. I wish I remembered something about it but I've since forgotten what I once knew.

Zinnias
Zinnias are one of the easiest flowers to grow because seeds require only basic garden preparation to sprout and the plants flower in just a few weeks; they can flourish with very little fertilizer and still produce flowers.

Exquisite!!!

Wall art
All things considered it doesn't look half bad. I'd be happy hanging this one on my wall..somewhere.

Key West Sunset
I use a strong telephoto lens it brings the sun closer making it appear large. This is only possible if there's adequate cloud/haze coverage combined with a dark filter on the lens otherwise the intensity of light overpowers the lens, camera and eye.

Red Mountain
The city of Ivins in Southwest Utah is located about 100 miles from Las Vegas. The centerpiece is Red Mountain which is the ever-present backdrop for Tuacahn Center for the Arts, Snow Canyon State Park and the art community of Kayenta.

Sea nettle
I took this photo of a sea nettle by simply shooting through the glass tank wall at the Monterrey Aquarium.
A sea nettle hunts by trailing those long tentacles, covered with stinging cells. When the tentacles touch tiny plankton, the stinging cells stick tight and paralyze prey. From there, the prey is moved to the frilly mouth-arms and finally to the mouth, where the jelly eats its meal.

Off the highway discovery
Lots of bullet holes

Bobcat
They have short tufts on the tips of their ears and “bob” tails, giving them their name. Adults may weigh 12 to 30 pounds. They are solitary and mainly active at dawn and dusk but can sometimes be seen during the day. The main prey for bobcats are rabbits which there are an abundance of. I took this photo in our yard in Utah.

Brian Head Peak
11,300 feet overlooking the town of Brian Head (out of sight) which is the highest year round occupied city in the USA. From here one can see Utah, Nevada and Arizona. Straight ahead the red scar is Cedar Breaks National monument. I drove up here in July and there were still snow drifts along the "road".

Bixby Creek Bridge
The bridge is "one of the most photographed features on the West Coast" and in the world. It has been featured on "postcards, TV ads, everywhere," according to the project manager for the Trust for Public Land. The location on the scenic Central Coast of California, the parabolic shape of the arch, the tall spandrel columns, and the architectural piers contribute to an "intense aesthetic experience. "It's the gateway to Big Sur and the interior has never been logged. The land is pristine, described as "...the most spectacular meeting of ocean and land in the entire United States." Wikipedia

Key West powerboat race. Four Super Boat class racers in close, about to head into open seas. They will make 10-12 laps on a triangular course stretching over 8-10 miles. This class of boat can reach almost 200mph on smooth water.

An interesting photo
This photo file is 87MB which means crystal clear resolution. When uploaded to this site you are looking at 106KB. Though not very sharp you can still make out those dark spots on the sun. The sun is so bright it overpowers a camera like our eyes if you try to look at it. In this rare case there was just enough cloud/haze that it could be easily photographed but not strong enough to hide those dark areas which are sunspots! Anyway, I think that's pretty amazing that we can see them in this photo.

These are the sand dunes with mountain range in the background. I took this on a bright sunny day with a black and white camera. The deep blue sky becomes grey black but lightens where the white sand reflects the sunlight upward.

Sunset Light
Florida Keys nearing sunset. Everything just kind of lined up for me at the right time. And, I had my camera.

Spinning Disney Ship
Standing on Sunset Key with Key West in the background. Because the harbor is a "dead end" all ships must turn around and head back out the way they came in. I love watching these huge ships to their spin.

Nicole Rules
The 1st race was scheduled for today on 11/9 but due to Tropical Storm Nicole it has been postponed. I asked someone if they race in bad weather and was told they will race if the rescue helicopters can fly. When a boat flips a hovering helicopter will drop rescue divers so if the winds make this difficult they can't race. They are scheduled to also race Friday and Sunday so hopefully the Nicole will be in a better mood.

Great Egret
Great Egret takeoff. The great egret is a large heron with all-white plumage. Standing up to 3.3 ft tall, this species can measure 31 to 41" in length and have a wingspan of 52 to 67 in. It can be found in shallow salt water while feeding.
