Foggy Sunrise
Wisconsin

A Close-up
There was enough cloud, fog and Canadian fire smoke to create a natural filter allowing me to take this with a very powerful lens without my camera and eyeball melting. If you are seeing this on a larger device screen you'll even be able to clearly see a sunspot on the right side above trees. I take quite a few photos, especially sunrises and it amazes me that a photo can easily capture trees 5 miles away with a sunspot 93 million miles behind them. This is the kind of stuff that makes this an enjoyable hobby.

Another brilliant key West sunset.

It’s real
I am fortunate to be able to get so many beautiful sunrise photos. And if the water is smooth......ah....reflection bonus.

Simple Sunset
Key West sunsets are wonderful and even the simple ones are nice if you throw in a couple palm trees.

Glad I was home
And I did not do any color enhancment.

Slot canyon
A slot canyon is a long, narrow channel or drainageway with sheer rock walls that are typically eroded into either sandstone or other sedimentary rock. A slot canyon has depth-to-width ratios that typically exceed 10:1 over most of its length and can approach 100:1. Some slot canyons can measure less than 1 metre (3 ft) across at the top but drop more than 30 metres (100 ft) to the floor of the canyon. Wikipedia
This Navajo sandstone canyon is in Page Arizona. The ideal time to photograph is between 10 and 2 when the sun is overhead to light up the walls.

Mirror
Based on the light sometimes I have to leave the shutter open to capture more light. This one took 6 seconds which had the added benefit of smoothing out the already flat lake.

In the back row
I love taking sunset photos in Key West. Sometimes I think I have enough but I'm always proven wrong because every sunset is a little different from all the others. For this one I'm sitting on a beach on a plastic lawn chair, camera with a big lens mounted on a tripod between my legs. I just Googled something like best sunset locations and Key West seemed to be on everyones top 10 list. Every evening there are 10-30 boats carrying their paid customers out for a front row view while I'm sitting in the back row hoping they will partially block my view.

Quiet Color
It requires clouds for a memorable sunrise or sunset but some sunrises need very little to emphasize the changing color bands as it makes its way closer to the horizon.

One Season Ends
Boating season ends but the light show continues.

Soft Sunrise

Double lake sunrise
Interesting clouds can form 50+ miles away over Lake Michigan due to warm air over colder water. These clouds catch the first light of the dawn like a theatre screen, and reflect this light to the ground which is again reflected in the calm 10 miles of inland lake water I'm photographing over here in Wisconsin.

Key West Sunset
Hard not to post these beautiful scenes.

Outstanding sunrise
What a beautiful beginning

B&W Sunrise
On a boat one morning in Key West. Sun was rising behind these palm trees offering nice contrast. I had my black & white camera and the water was smooth so I took a couple photos. As it is usually the brilliant colors that make a beautiful sunrise this looked so different when I peered through the cameras colorless viewfinder. Anyway, it is different.

Sunrise Surprise
Sitting on the dock focusing, one eye closed, on the sunrise and distant clouds, this rower appears in my viewfinder. He was so silent I never heard him coming.

Gunlock Reservoir
Gunlock Reservoir is located in the scenic red rock country of southwestern Utah. It is a pretty little reservoir popular for boating and other water sports. It offers good fishing at times, particularly for largemouth bass and channel catfish.

Doubler
Water drops on the lens glass but a very pretty sight.

Mirrored Color
Smooth Wisconsin lake, total silence and a colorful dawn.

Fireball Rising
Almost impossible to photograph the sun without clouds. Even with their help I have to lower the amount of light coming into the camera. This reduces the light everywhere except the the sun, and its reflection. The fisherman floated by at just the right moment to make for a much more interesting photo.

Green Flash
You may have heard of the green flash in Key West. Per Wikipedia: When the conditions are right, a distinct green spot is briefly visible above the upper rim of the Sun's disk; the green appearance usually lasts for no more than two seconds. One evening I took a fast series of photos when it actually appeared (pure luck). Anyway, here's the authentic, elusive green flask.

Sunset Drama
Just before the sun set this huge hole opened up and seemed to breathe fire.

Stormy Sunrise
Sun was rising behind my left shoulder while this lightning show was performing over the Gulf of Mexico.

Sunrise Palms
A few strands of christmas lights, palms against a nice sunrise made for a pretty sight.

A Sunset from Sunset Key
Sunset Key is a 10 minute ferry ride from the Key West mainland.

Solar Thermal
This is the Ivanpah Solar Energy Facility in the Mojave desert in southern California, one of the world’s largest solar thermal energy plants. The facility uses more than 170,000 devices called heliostats, each consisting of two mirrors that direct solar energy onto boilers found on the three centralised solar power towers rising 458 feet. The boilers then use the sun’s heat to produce steam that drives turbines to generate electricity.

Sunset sailing in Key West
Every evening the waters around Key West FL are full of boats watching the sun set. It's truly one of those spots where it's hard to take a bad photo.

Unusual One
This is an unusual sunrise and the reflection in the lake really enhances it.

Up-close sunset
Standing on the beach last week photographing a Key West sunset the sky looked wild as the sun moved below the horizon. I had a strong lens on the camera so I just zoomed in close and this is what the camera saw.

Glad I had my camera for this one.

Look Up
Standing at the bottom of a slot canyon in AZ about noon. The sun lights up the sandstone but blocks the bright sun making for interesting photos.
ISO50 Leica 35mm f/16 8 seconds.

Enterprise
One very cold morning we drove over the mountains you see in the distance. Here in Enterprise NV it's flat endless hay fields. This sunrise was beautiful, lighting up ground fog/haze and the vegetation picked up the sky color as it was frost white. My fingers froze working the camera quickly to capture this.

Slot Canyon
In Page AZ there are some fine slot canyons on the reservations. Some have relatively easy access but some require negotiating ladders and steps. When the sun is high in the sky the Navajo sandstone lights up in different shades of red and golds. It's hard not to take a good photo in these canyons as long as you have a camera that allows lots of light to enter as it's rather dark at these depths.

Key West Sunset
I use a strong telephoto lens it brings the sun closer making it appear large. This is only possible if there's adequate cloud/haze coverage combined with a dark filter on the lens otherwise the intensity of light overpowers the lens, camera and eye.

Foggy Morning
Above the cloud bank over Lake Michigan and through the fog.

Precision
The clouds split the sun into very precise bands of light. When the light is heavily filtered like this the sun itself is very easy to photograph as in this Wisconsin sunrise.

Sky sun water Art
Every morning is so different. Because it's dark at that hour I will leave the shutter open for as long as a minute to let what little light there is, soak into the camera's sensor.

Slot Canyon
Around Page AZ there are 6-10 slot canyons on tribal lands. Some are very deep so between 10am-2pm the sunlight shines down and if you can hold a camera steady the resulting photos are very pretty.

Rich Color
WI Sunrise...color like this is extremely rae

An interesting photo
This photo file is 87MB which means crystal clear resolution. When uploaded to this site you are looking at 106KB. Though not very sharp you can still make out those dark spots on the sun. The sun is so bright it overpowers a camera like our eyes if you try to look at it. In this rare case there was just enough cloud/haze that it could be easily photographed but not strong enough to hide those dark areas which are sunspots! Anyway, I think that's pretty amazing that we can see them in this photo.

Foggy Sunrise
Used a long lens to pull the island closer in this very foggy, golden morning light in Wisconsin.

Sky Fire
Slow fireworks it is....

Sunrise Spectacular
Color Explosion at Dawn. When taking sunrise photos I leave my shutter open to capture the low light but when the tiniest amount of pure sun breaches I have to quickly change the camera settings or it will overpower the camera sensor.
